Setting up the Phoenix-25

This page is a condensed explanation of how to go about installing and setting up the Castle Creations Phoenix-25 speed controller for use in the Protech Zoom electric helicopter with a three cell Li-Po battery pack.

Connecting the Speed Controller

Firstly the motor is connected to the side of the controller that has three wires. The wires can be connected in any order and to change rotation of the motor you can swap any two of the motor wires. The receiver lead connects to your receiver (usually channel 3) and the remaining two wires will need to connect to your battery via a suitable 2mm plug system.

Entering the Programming Mode

The Phoenix-25 software is designed to make it difficult to accidentally enter the programming mode. To enter the programming mode you must follow these steps:

  • Remove battery power from the Phoenix-25.

  • Move your transmitter throttle stick to the top position.

  • Reconnect the battery to the Phoenix-25.

  • After 2 seconds, the controller will emit a short beep and the LED will flash a short, single flash followed by a pause.

  • Move your throttle stick to the centre position.

  • After 2 seconds, the controller will emit a short beep and the LED will flash a short, double flash followed by a pause.

  • Move your throttle stick to the top position again.

  • After 2 seconds, the controller will emit a short beep and the LED will flash a short, triple flash followed by a pause.

  • Move your throttle stick to the centre position again.

  • After 2 seconds, the controller will emit four short beeps and the LED will start a flash sequence of a single flash followed by another single flash, followed by a long pause.

The Phoenix-25 is now in the programming mode.

Programming the Phoenix-25

The controller will now ask a series of questions by means of a sequence of beeps/flashes and pauses. Answer 'YES' by moving the throttle stick to the top for 2 seconds or answer 'NO' by moving the throttle stick to the bottom for 2 seconds. When the Phoenix-25 has accepted your answer it will flash the LED rapidly at this point return the throttle stick to the centre position. For setting the Phoenix-25 controller in a Protech Zoom answer 'NO' to all questions except those listed below.

  • Programming setting 1: A 9.0V Cut-off Voltage - Answer 'YES' to Option 5 (1 flash/beep, short pause, 5 flashes/beeps, long pause).

  • Programming setting 2: Standard Current Limit - Answer 'YES' to Option 3 (2 flashes/beeps, short pause, 3 flashes/beeps, long pause).

  • Programming setting 3: No Brake - Answer 'YES' to Option 5 (3 flashes/beeps, short pause, 5 flashes/beeps, long pause).

  • Programming setting 4: Low RPM Governor Mode - Answer 'YES' to Option 3 (4 flashes/beeps, short pause, 3 flashes/beeps, long pause).

  • Programming setting 5: Standard Electronic Timing Advance - Answer 'YES' to Option 2 (5 flashes/beeps, short pause, 2 flashes/beeps, long pause).

  • Programming setting 6: Soft Cut-off - Answer 'YES' to Option 2 (6 flashes/beeps, short pause, 2 flashes/beeps, long pause).

  • Programming setting 7: Soft Start - Answer 'YES' to Option 2 (7 flashes/beeps, short pause, 2 flashes/beeps, long pause).

Your Phoenix-25 speed controller is now set up.

Setting up Governor Throttle Curves

If you follow the instructions above and set the governor mode you will need to set up a throttle curve in your transmitter to govern the head speed. This will depend on what radio transmitter you are using but initially set points 2-5 on your normal mode to say 40%. As you run up the helicopter you will hear the governor take over and you can adjust the percentage accordingly to a suitable head speed. In your Idle-up 1 throttle you must set all points from 1-5 to your governor percentage, say 50% for a slightly higher head speed. If you want to set up an Idle-up 2 curve do this in the same way. The graphs below show examples of how to set up your throttle curves for the Phoenix-25 governor mode.
