Scale Helicopters

Scale helicopters are becoming increasingly popular at the club so here are a few pictures and details of the models being flown and also some information on ones that are in the process of being built. Follow this link to see the progress of our two Chinook's that are in the process of being built by Martin Heward and Richard Addington.

Tony Hallas's MD500's

Here's some new pictures of Tony's MD500 models. More details to follow but they are based on Thunder Tiger Raptor mechanics.....

Darren Clark's Zoom 400 Airwolf

Here's the first shots of Darren's recently converted Zoom 400 to Airwolf. The fuz is by Pro Models and is vac formed in two halves. The front nose section is removable for access to the battery compartment and has a fitted glazing section. The kit came complete with fibreglass rear vertical and fins and foam horizontal stabilisers. A plywood section holds the internal mechanics to the fuzz and also holds the tricycle undercarriage legs.

Phil's Vario Allouette II Gasser

Philip Martin's Vario Allouette II Gasser

Here's Phil's new Vario Alouette II with the G321 Zenoah engine. Running at the moment with the two blade head, until he can afford the upgrade to a fancy 3 blade system. The blades are a massive 750 mm x 75 mm and Phil even had to buy the Vario pitch gauge as his existing Century one wouldn't open up enough. It's running with a 4 point CCPM set up, all Futaba 9202's, a JR 591 on the throttle and a CSM 540 / JR G2700 on the tail. TX is of course PCM, just in case of any glitches.

Phil is considering either having the S/S frame powder coated or chromed in a nice darkish blue!

Here are the first shots of Phil's large scale Vario carbon fibre Airwolf. The mechanics are fitted and the heli is almost ready for it's maiden shakedown flight.

Richard Addington's large scale Vario Huey

Richard Addington's Vario Huey

Here's the first few tantalizing pictures of Richard's large scale Vario Huey. As you can seen from the close up picture (right) of the fuselage even fine detailing like individual rivet heads have been added so far. Keep an eye out here for more pictures as the build progresses.....

Ged's Kavan Bell JetRanger

Ged Drury's Kavan Bell JetRanger

At around 25 years old this is Ged's latest acquisition. Still flying but a bit of a handful at the moment. After some TLC it will no doubt be a fine machine... hopefully for 25 more years!

Doug Sims Vario Allouette II

Doug Sims Vario Allouette II

Here is Doug Sims Vario Allouette II. He has fitted the JR Vigor mechanics himself which allowed him to utilize the tube drive system and run the drive along the top of the ladder frame boom just like the real helicopter. He has also made the tail removable for ease of transport.

Zoom 400 mechanics converted and ready for the fuzz

Colin Andrew's Agusta A119 Zoom conversion

In between building his JetRanger and EC135 seen below, Colin has also found time to convert his Zoom 400 into this fantastic little Agusta A119 Koala!

Colins new EC135 kit waiting to be built

Colin Andrew's Forthcoming EC135

Here's Colin's new project - a Vario EC135 kit! The mechanics are on their way now including a four blade head and fenestron tail. More pictures will be posted as the build progresses. I wonder what the final colour scheme will be....blue and white perhaps!

Colin's immaculate JetRanger

Colin Andrew's JetRanger

Colin's JetRanger is one of the most detailed scale models you will see. It has everything from working navigation lights to windscreen wipers!

Philip Martin's JetRanger

Having fitted the mechanics into the fuselage its always worth test flying the model to iron out any problems before the paintwork and finishing is done. Phil's model uses Miniature Aircraft X-Cell mechanics.

Once the model has been checked out and test flown the paintwork and all the finishing detail can be added.

Mechanics and retracts in place

Lee's Bell 222 with working retracts

Lee Hudson's Bell 222

Having a working retractable undercarriage set adds even more character to a scale model. Lee's model is a pre-painted 60 size Century fuselage with Graupner Uni-mechanics.
