Welcome to Cleveland Model Helicopter Club's home page!

Cleveland Model Helicopter Club is really all about people and helicopters. Primarily we are model helicopter enthusiasts who build, maintain and fly model helicopters. Club members fly 3D aerobatic helicopters as well as scale models and some are just learning the mysteries of radio controlled, or R/C model, flight. Fixed wing aircraft are not a common sight at the field but we do fly them occasionally. We have no formal meetings and generally we just get on and fly, that is why we have the club in the first place after all! If you should ever feel the urge to rush out and buy a model helicopter and live near the Cleveland area, come along, you'll be quite welcome. Even if you are just thinking about it, come along anyway as we are only too happy to share our knowledge of radio controlled flight.

Just a few of the models we fly

Model helicopter flying is, for the uninitiated, a black art. Helicopters, by their very nature of design have a natural desire to crash into the nearest immovable object. Trees and bushes become magnetic and they always want to shoot off in a direction not intended. We hope that these pages will help you understand what these machines are all about and if you get a chance, come along and fly with us, if you cannot yet fly but would like to, come along anyway. Don't for one second think we are all experts, some of us can do little more than hover so far, there are however some very accomplished pilots in the club who are more than happy to help any newcomer learn to fly. If you want to read more visit our Getting Started and Learning to Fly pages to give you an idea what is involved in model helicopter flying.

2009 Club Membership Subs are now due.

Club and BMFA fees will remain unchanged for 2009. If you do not pay for membership you are not insured to fly!

Rubbish & Litter

It has been noted that people are leaving waste items at the field such as bottles, sandwich wrappers, crisp packets etc. Please take your rubbish and litter away with you rather than leaving it for someone else to remove. If you should crash please take care to remove all broken parts from the field as Cows will eat pretty much anything including Carbon Fibre!

BMFA Advertisment

Cleveland Model Helicopter Club were asked by the BMFA if they could use one of our pictures in an advertisement to be published in the December 2006 issue of Rotorworld Magazine. The resulting advert is show to the right and can be maximised by clicking on it:

Outdoor Flying
Generally we are at the field most Saturday and Sunday afternoons and also during the lighter, summer nights we meet up on a Wednesday evening at around 6pm too. You can often find people at the field at any time during the week so stop by and have a chat. Obviously our flying is always weather dependant - I
f it is bad, we usually still show up anyway and stand under the trees for shelter, but if it is really, really bad we stay at home and moan about the weather!

As you can see below this is perfect flying weather. We are all always hopeful of good flying weather like this but this last year has been pretty poor. On occasion we have to share our flying field with a heard of cows, the bright side is that they keep the grass down, the down side is that they leave an awful lot of mess which you rarely avoid when your eyes are gazing skyward!

Even in weather like this we manage to fly!

It's not always hot and sunny in England like the pictures to the left. Even in snowy weather like this above we manage to get some flying done although you can't feel your fingers or toes after about five minutes. Still it's fun - well to a certain degree anyway!

Indoor Flying
In the winter months we fly electric micro helicopters such as Piccolo's, Zoom's, Dolphin's, Zap's and T-Rex indoors at Nunthorpe School Sports Hall in the afternoon and evening from 3:00pm of the first Saturday of each month. There is also an indoor meeting every Monday night at 'The Dome' at Boulby Potash Mine from 7:00pm onwards. As these events are not arranged by Cleveland Model Helicopter Club you do not need to be a member to fly but charges vary from around £2.50 to £3.00 per pilot for each of these events to cover the cost of hiring the hall or dome. Valid third party insurance may be required in the way of BMFA membership and models must be no bigger than T-Rex 450 size. Have a look at the events page to see some indoor action. Directions for these venues can be seen on our directions page.

Events

Our Events page lists things coming up each year and also what's been happening over the past few seasons. Including the 3D Masters World Championship and the Teesside Model Flying Club annual airshow where we make a regular appearance.

Television Stardom

A couple of us were invited to show off our helicopters on early morning RI:SE tv and even got to meet the lovely Holly Valance. Read how it all went on our RI:SE tv page.
